How to Roast Ham In an Electric Roaster?

  • It’s time to pour in the glaze once the ham has reached an internal temperature of 100 degrees F, or 3/4 of the allotted cooking time has elapsed. It took 1 1/2 hours for my 8 pound ham to get to this point.
  • Open the grill lid, unwrap the foil, and pour 2/3 of the glaze mixture over the ham. 1/3 of the mixture should be set aside for later.
  • Replace the grill cover and re-wrap the ham.
  • Use a pastry brush to brush any remaining glaze over the ham once it reaches an internal temperature of 120 degrees.
  • Wrap the ham back in and continue cooking it at 275F until it reaches an internal temperature of 140F.
  • Caramelizing the maple glaze on the outside of the ham is an optional final step. To do this, remove the foil and preheat the oven to 425F. For 10 minutes, bake the ham at 425 degrees with the lid and foil open. This helps in creating a crunchy black caramel crust on your maple-coated ham, but it will dry it out a bit. This is something I did because I prefer a little “crust on the exterior.”

Here are simple step-by-step instructions for making my maple-coated ham:

  • To start, fill the bottom of the electric grill with 2-4 cups of water. Fill the grill with enough water to cover the bottom to a depth of about 1/4 inch. Inside, put a roasting rack.
  • Place several sheets of aluminum foil on a table or work surface, overlapping to prevent ham juice from leaking between the sheets. Heavy duty foil should be used.   • Wrap the foil around the ham, leaving the top exposed. Place the ham on the roasting rack of the grill.
  • After that, place the thermometer probe in the center of the ham. Make sure the probe is not in contact with the bone.
  • If any liquid remains from the package, pour it over the ham. Wrap the ham snugly in the foil, but leave it loose enough to open later to pour over the glaze.
  • Make sure the electric grill cover is firmly attached. Because the probe thermometer wire is small and flexible, you can still close the lid. Preheat oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit. Set the thermometer to 140 degrees F to warn you when the ham is done.
  • The ham will take 15-20 minutes per pound to heat once the oven reaches 275 degrees. It takes a little over 2 hours to cook an eight-pound ham.
  • Time your ham to cook about half an hour before you plan to serve it. It’s okay to heat the ham for up to two hours, but it will dry out. Make sure it is well protected.

  • Preheat the electric toaster oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Fill the bottom of the electric grill with a small amount of liquid, such as water or stock. Place the ham on the rack in the oven. Season the surface of the ham with the seasoning of your choice. Simple flavors like pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder are my home favorites. I wrapped whole cloves around the ham and topped with pineapple chunks.
  • Using the cooking schedule above, cover with a dome lid and cook until the ham is fully heated. Before removing the ham to serve, I check it with a meat thermometer to make sure it’s cooked through. Smoked ham should be cooked to 160 degrees Fahrenheit in the middle and fully cooked ham to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut and serve.

Covering the ham in the glaze and grilling it in a roasting pan is a great way to keep it moist and delicious. Some people may suggest using a slow cooker, but spiral ham is not suitable for a slow cooker.

To get started, double check that your toaster oven is large enough. I have an Oster electric toaster oven with a capacity of 20 liters. It’s ideal for this. Any size roasting oven will suffice, as long as it’s big enough to hold the ham without touching the sides.

Then, at the bottom of the roasting pan, place the rack that came with the toaster oven. No need to add any liquid. If too much liquid is added, the ham will be boiled rather than roasted.

Remove the spiral-cut ham from the package and drain the remaining liquid. Spray the disposable pan with cooking spray afterwards. Place the ham in the bottom of the disposable pan, flat side down or “face edge” down. The flatter side of the ham is below in this photo, making the face visible.

Half of the glaze should be applied to the entire ham. Let the glaze soak in between the slices as you gently separate them. If you peel the strips too much, the spiral ham will lose its firm appearance.

Place the disposable pan on the roasting rack. Preheat oven to 250F and cook ham, covered, for 12-15 minutes per pound, or until internal temperature reaches 140-145F. A digital meat thermometer in the thickest part of the ham is a great way to check.

Pour in the remaining juice from the ham once it is completely warm. Then, using the remaining ham glaze, scrape off the outer layer. Return the ham to the grill, cover, and set aside for 20 minutes to rest.

Optional, but highly recommended: Bake until brown and crispy, like honey-roasted ham, in a disposable pan on the middle rack of a standard oven (make sure to support the bottom). Or, if you have a cooking torch, use it to carefully caramelize the edges of the ham.

No additional water or other liquids are required unless specified in the recipe because the closed grill captures and recycles moisture from food as it cooks.
