I grew up eating Honeybaked ham during the holidays, just like most of you.
It’s sad to realize that, while ham and turkey are gluten-free, the glaze used on both contains gluten, making it dangerous for anyone following a gluten-free diet.
Honeybaked changed its glaze in 2008, removing gluten and soy, making the ham/turkey gluten-free, but gluten-free versions are not available in every location.
A gluten-free version of ham/turkey was available in all stores in 2009, although there is still some uncertainty in the gluten-free community.
To clear things up, headquarters called each division individually to ensure that they had adopted the allergen friendly glaze, which they had. (Their modified meal flour is made from corn, and the caramel color is gluten-free.)
Note: Despite HoneyBaked’s assurances that all of their glazes are now gluten-free, one of our readers came across a ham that didn’t have a reformulated glaze.
We contacted their office about this, but we recommend that our readers study the ingredients in the glaze that comes with their ham or prepare their own glaze.
Those of us on a gluten-free diet can now enjoy Honeybaked ham/turkey any time of the year, and we don’t have to worry about eating it if it’s served at work or social events.

Which processed meats are gluten-free
Processed meat is unhealthy. The most common ones have a lot of cancer-causing preservatives in them. There is some debate about whether meat from grain-fed animals causes gluten intolerance in gluten-intolerant people. Because a variety of grains are used in their production, processed meats such as cold cuts, liverwurst, hot dogs, sausages, bologna, pepperoni, salami, and pate are rich in gluten.
Is ham with maple leaf flakes gluten free
Over the past five years, the demand for gluten-free products has increased by about 26%! Over the next five years, marketing experts predict a slower growth rate of around 10%. That’s probably because trusted healthcare professionals point out that a gluten-free diet is not a cure for obesity, and consumers’ impressions of its health are fading.
Gluten-free products that help add variety to the diets of people with celiac disease, wheat allergies, or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, who make up about 5% of the population, will always have a market. However, according to sales data, about 22% of Canadians now buy gluten-free items.
Many gluten-free dieters in Canada say they choose the diet “to feel better, not because of a medical diagnosis,” according to a survey. The Gluten Free Study surveyed 2,530 Canadians about why they avoid gluten, and the following are the most common responses:
- GI health improved (52 percent)
- a healthier weight (36 percent)
- increased activity level (32 percent)
- improved state of mind (31 percent)
This is important data because it shows that dieting doesn’t have to be for medical reasons, and that these Canadians can end diets as quickly as they started. This is in stark contrast to people who have medical problems that require a gluten-free diet for the rest of their lives.
Surprisingly, 15% of gluten-free Canadians have eliminated or reduced gluten to support family members on a gluten-free diet. That means they pay more attention when they go shopping or eat out to make sure there’s no gluten in their cart or on their plate.
Food makers are creating grain-free versions of carbohydrate-rich staples such as pasta, breads, and cereals to meet consumer demand. Even foods that never contained gluten now have a “gluten-free claim” on their labels to entice customers.
Gluten can be found in small amounts as a thickener, stabilizer, or part of seasoning mixes, in addition to conventional wheat-containing items such as bagels and cakes. Gluten can be found in unexpected areas like ice cream, dry roasted nuts, and deli meats in this scenario. To guarantee that they are buying gluten-free foods, savvy shoppers should read labels carefully.
