How do you cook ham in a roaster
Glazing and roasting the ham in a roasting pan is the best way to keep the ham moist and delicious. Some people may suggest a slow cooker, but spiral hams are not suitable for slow cookers.
First, double check that your oven is large enough. I have an Oster electric oven with a capacity of 20 quarts. This is ideal. Any size oven will suffice, as long as it’s large enough to hold the ham without touching the sides.
Then, on the bottom of the pan, place the grill that came with your oven. No need to add any liquid. If too much liquid is added, the ham will simmer rather than roast.
Remove spiral cut ham from package and drain any remaining liquid. Spray the disposable pan afterwards with cooking spray. Place the ham in the bottom of a disposable pan, flat side down or “face down.” In this photo, the flatter side of the ham is facing down, revealing the face.
Half of the glaze should cover the entire ham. Allow the glaze to soak in between the slices as you gently separate them. If you peel off the pieces too much, the spiral ham will lose its tight appearance.
Place the disposable pan on the grill. Preheat oven to 250F and cook ham, covered, for 12-15 minutes per pound, or until internal temperature reaches 140-145F. A digital meat thermometer in the thickest part of the ham is the best way to check this.
Once the ham is fully heated, pour in the remaining juices. Then, with the remaining ham glaze, brush the outer layer. Return the ham to the oven, cover and let rest for 20 minutes.
Optional, but highly recommended: Roast on a disposable pan on the center rack of a standard oven until browned and crispy, like a honey-baked ham (make sure to support the bottom). Or, if you have a cooking torch, use it to carefully caramelize the edges of the ham.
