Have you ever wondered if you should cook the ham or eat it straight from the fridge? We got the ham from the deli and didn’t have to prepare it ourselves, which was a bit puzzling. In short, if a ham is cured, smoked, or roasted, it is considered “precooked” and does not need to be cooked. This includes any ham purchased from a deli. In fact, most hams on the market are already cured, smoked or baked. It can be eaten straight from the refrigerator as cooked meat, although other hams are usually reheated for better flavor and texture. You can also buy fresh ham, but it must be cooked before eating.
If the ham is processed, the type of ham will be indicated on the package. If the ham’s package label states that it needs to be cooked (for example, “thoroughly cooked”), also include cooking instructions. It should be clearly stated that cooking is required.
Even cured ham needs to be refrigerated at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. The only exception is if the ham is canned or dry cured, in which case it can be kept at room temperature. Dry-cured hams include country ham and prosciutto. Most hams will last three to five days in the refrigerator and three to six months in the freezer, although exact times can be obtained online as there are some varieties.
“Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit,” advises the USDA. Cook all raw fresh and instant hams to a minimum internal temperature of 145F as tested with a food thermometer before removing the meat from the heat. For safety and quality, allow meat to rest for at least three minutes before cutting or serving. Consumers may prefer to cook beef at higher temperatures due to personal choice. Reheat cooked hams packaged in USDA-inspected plants to 140°F and all other hams to 165°F.
Trichinella is a parasite found in pork, but its presence is low because processing companies must eradicate it according to USDA standards. Regardless, MSU Extension recommends following proper food safety procedures when handling ham. For example, store in the refrigerator at 40F, at room temperature for no more than two hours, and cook and reheat as directed.

- For 2 hours, spritz the ham with apple juice every 15 minutes. (Wearing a TimeStick around your neck ensures you never forget to spray!) Spraying the ham will make the surface sticky, making it easier for the smoke to penetrate.
- Raise the smoker’s temperature to 275-300F after two hours of spraying (149C).
- Set the low alarm for the air temperature channel to 270F (132C) and the high alarm to 305F. (152C).
- Cover and spread the glaze liberally over the ham.
- Brush the ham with a glaze every 15 minutes. If you want your smoked ham to be extra sticky and smooth, double the glaze recipe and brush the glaze between slices. The glaze adheres better to the spirally sliced ham because there is more exposed surface area. Um!
- Cook the ham until the internal temperature reaches 140°F (60°F). Depending on the amount of ham and how well the smoker keeps the temperature, this can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours.
- When the altitude alarm on the Smoke X2 goes off, use the Thermapen to check the internal temperature of the ham in multiple locations.

- After checking the pull temperature, remove the ham from the smoker, cover with heavy aluminum foil and let it rest for 15 minutes.
- Slice and serve with the juices in the pan.
Is it better to bake ham at 325F or 350F
The ideal oven temperature for cooking ham is 325 degrees Fahrenheit. The USDA has detailed recommendations for how long cooked hams should be cooked. This guide provides instructions on how to prepare fresh food, along with a temperature recommendation of 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, this does not rule out the possibility of cooking the ham at 350F. However, at higher temperatures it will take a different time.
How long should a fully cooked ham be cooked
These hams are very cold, but the instructions to reheat them are usually on the package. Place the sliced ham on heavy duty aluminum foil and wrap tightly. Alternatively, use an oven bake bag and prepare according to the bag’s directions. Bake in preheated 325F oven for 10-14 minutes per pound, or until meat thermometer reaches 135F. Remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes before serving. If the ham has extra glaze, add and cook according to package recommendations. Set the oven to 400 degrees F, brush the ham with the glaze, and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the glaze is golden brown and bubbly. Let rest 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Speaking of making ham, how long does it take
- Remove the ham from the refrigerator and let it cool to room temperature for 30 minutes.
- Choose the glaze you want to use.
- For Apple-Maple Glaze, reduce the cider to 1/2 cup in a saucepan over medium-high heat for 8 to 10 minutes. Reduce heat to low and add apple jelly, maple syrup, mustard, allspice, and nutmeg, stirring constantly.
- In a bowl, combine brown sugar, mustard, orange zest, and mustard-orange juice.
- To make the seafood spice glaze, combine the following ingredients in a small mixing bowl. In a small skillet, toast allspice and peanut oil over medium heat for 1 minute. 1 cup water, hoisin sauce, honey, rice vinegar and soy sauce, reduce to 1 1/2 cups after boiling for 5 minutes.
- To make the pineapple apricot glaze, combine the following ingredients in a small mixing bowl. In a saucepan, combine lime juice, ginger and pineapple juice. Boil for 8 to 10 minutes, or until liquid reduces to 1/2 cup. After straining, place lime zest, candied apricots, and mustard in a mixing bowl.
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove excess skin from the ham. Use a sharp paring knife to score the fat in a diagonal cross-hatched pattern without cutting through the meat. Place cloves (if using) at the intersection of the ham cuts (if using).
- In a roasting pan, lay the ham flat on a rack. Pour 1/4 inch of water into the bottom of the pot. Transfer to oven and bake for 2 hours and 30 minutes, or until a thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the ham reads 130F. (about 15 minutes per pound).
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Brush the ham with half of the glaze. If the water in the bottom of the pot has evaporated, add extra water.
- Return the ham to the oven and bake for another 45 minutes, applying the remaining glaze every 10 minutes.

- Remove the pan from the oven.
- When the internal temperature reaches 140°F in the thickest part, remove the ham from the oven.
- Let it rest.
- Allow 15-20 minutes of rest before slicing the ham.
- Just before serving, spoon the liquid over the ham.
