He looked into the feasibility of importing pea bacon, but was put off by red tape. Then it occurred to him that he could do business over the internet.

He now offers “Canadian Pea Back Bacon” on the internet. The company is based in Michigan and its products are manufactured in Canada and imported into the United States, where they are inspected by the USDA and classified as undercooked Canadian bacon.

“I buy from the largest supplier of pea bacon in Canada,” explains Havilland. “We only ship on order; we don’t have any retail locations.”

According to Haviland, the origins of this meat can be traced back to the turn of the nineteenth century. Due to a pork shortage in England, the country started importing pork “bacon” from Canada. Then these things were siphoned off by the British.
